Recently, some new and innovative capabilities are included in the SharePoint 2013. One of the most important of these is the integration of SkyDrive with SharePoint Online. SkyDrive has changed the overall game for SharePoint Online in a number of important areas:

  • For SharePoint Online libraries it provides integration with the local file system.
  • It maintains integrated security and enterprise management features through Office 365
  • The My Site storage space of the user is increased from 500MB to 7GB
  • It gives us the facility to share files and directories with anyone in the world

There are two types of SkyDrive application available in the market, one is SkyDrive and other is SkyDrive Pro. With these applications you can keep your devices up to date with the current documents of your important files. Both SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro are compatible with personal computers, Mac, IOS, surface and phones. But SkyDrive works against My Sites and public SkyDrive accounts and SkyDrive Pro works against SharePoint Online document libraries.

It makes folders in the local disk to maintain the the copies of SharePoint and SkyDrive libraries. It is a multi-directional sync where you can use your local file system to interact with both SharePoint Online and SkyDrive. We can do all the basic operations on cloud like adding or opening the file as easily as on your local machine. Apart from this it has also make it easier for many applications that cannot use SharePoint directly and now they can interact with these SharePoint libraries.

SkyDrive is well known publicly available service that many of us are familiar with. With the latest Office 365, we can now use the Active Directory (AD) credentials to authenticate to SkyDrive. In SharePoint 2013 SkyDrive Pro has replaced the SharePoint Workspace. Earlier SharePoint Workspace was used to provide off-line synchronization with SharePoint. Apart from this it has replaced the document storage in SharePoint 2007 My Site, which was not accepted well. We can access SkyDrive Pro from the toolbar area. It gives the facility for users to store documents which either private or accessible by others. The major ability is to follow documents in SharePoint via SkyDrive with proper notification of changes. Users can get feedback from others in the form of ratings. This synchronization capability is achieved from a local machine folder which is mapped drive of a SharePoint library.

SkyDrive Pro has got great potential in the workplace. Companies need to find out that how they can make best use and create finest practices out of this SkyDrive Pro.
